Pikes Peak Region Smart-Growth Charette and Sustainability Plan

June 3 - 5, 2010
Colorado College, McHugh Commons

“It is clear that the form of our communities is the fundamental determinant of so many things that matter…”
Andres Duany, FAIA

AIA Colorado South invites the professional design community and the public to a two-and-a-half day charette with the goal of drafting an initial Smart-Growth Sustainability Plan for the Pikes Peak Region. Building on the energy and knowledge of past events and hearing from many groups actively engaged in putting sustainability into practice, a shared understanding and common vision of smart growth may emerge that is regional, comprehensive and transformational.
The discussion starting point will be a number of relevant past events and initiatives including:

  • AIA Colorado South AIA150 Great Streets Great Skylines: http://tiny.cc/aiacscharette
  • AIA's Center for Livable Communities
  • Dream City Vision 2020
  • The efforts and pertinent information of numerous related organizations including: the Urban Land Institute (ULI), the American Planning Association (APA), Partnership for Community Design (PCD), Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU), the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), Fort Carson, Green Cities Coalition, Colorado State University (CSU), Colorado Springs Community Development, Council of Neighborhoods and Organizations (CONO), the Colorado Springs Streetcar Feasibility Task Force and many others.

As a regional plan is multi-disciplinary in nature, AIA Colorado South welcomes presentations and discussions from other peer group initiatives that can inform the process in the areas of planning, transportation, infrastructure, utilities and economic development, as well as from governmental agencies and neighborhood organizations. The charette seeks to realize the following outcomes:

1. The creation of a graphically-compelling alternative community vision that defines what smart-growth means to the community, in terms of economic growth within the framework of existing infrastructure, new transportation possibilities and reduced energy requirements.

2. The emergence of key stakeholder groups that can continue beyond the charette as part of other ongoing initiatives and implementation strategies.

3. The identification of a process by which a jurisdictional regional sustainability plan can be further developed and ultimately adopted.
